Mikulov is a synonym for vineyards and a glass of quality wine. Yet, this town offers much more.
Chateau and Holy Hill (Svatý kopeček)
Mikulov skyline is dominated by Liechteinstein and later Dietrichstein chateau situated on a distinct cliff. The most interesting parts of the chateau are the chateau library and the Ancestors´ Hall The chateau currently houses the Regional Museum of Mikulov with several interesting exhibitions.
To the east of the chateau, the second dominant of Mikulov looms: Svatý kopeček (Holy Hill) which is a part of the Pálava Hills. Thanks to the extensive occurence of rare plant species, the hill has been announced botanical reserve as early as in 1946 and natural reverve in 1992.
Goats and a tomb
Kozí hrádek (Goat Hill) has recently undergone landscaping and became a freely accessible recreational centre. On the top of the Goat Hill a two-storey bombarding tower with a gallery and loopholes was built in 15th century. The tower improved defence of Mikulov, namely the Mikulov castle (nowadays chateau), whose defence system thus became advanced in the context of Central Europe. The late Gothic fortification with a blade has survived until the present days.
Dietrichstein Tomb
Originally built as St. Anne´s Church and Italian Loretta, the building became a family sepulchre of the Dietrichsteins in the mid 19th century. It is protected as a Czech national monument. At present there is a courtyard, grave chapel, two aisles with coffins and stairs in the south tower leading to a terrace.
Now you can see how many possibilities there are in one small town. Which will you visit first?
