Lednice-Valtice Complex – welcome to the land of fairy tales!

Lednice-Valtice Complex is the must-go of your itinerary. This breathtaking 283,09 km² landscape compex is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is adjacent to Austria to the south, Pálava region to the west, and the river Dyje to the east and north.
The region on the border of Moravia and Lower Austria was shaped by the family of Liechteinstein during the 18th and 19th centrury to create a nature park. Nowadays, the compex offers the most magnificent sights.

Lednice Castle and Greenhouse

Lednice Castle and its extensive garden is among the most splendid areas of its kind in the Czech Republic. Its today´s appearance comes from a large-scale reconstruction in 1850s. The gorgeous exterior promises a splendid interior: original panel ceilings, wooden historic furniture and, last but not least, an impressive 360-degree spiral staircase made without using a single nail, which connects the library with the princely bedroom.
Ouside, a large greenhouse stands adjacent to the right wing of the castle. The greenhouse boasts with the most precious greenhouse plant in the Czech Republic: a 300 – 500-year old cycas tree Encephalartos Altensteinii. The castle is surrounded by a park with a number of rare tree species, ponds and fascinating buildings, such as the Border House (Hraniční zámeček), Temple of the Three Graces (Tři Grácie), Hunting Lodge (Lovecký zámeček), Obelisk and more.

The Minaret

The Minaret is a 60 m high romantic-style observation tower. It is located on the grounds of Lednice Castle in the Lednice-Valtice Complex. The Minaret is the oldest preserved observation tower in the Czech Republic and, at the same time, the only Czech minaret.
It is situated 175 m above the sea level, its height is 60 m. The Minaret offers magnificent views from three galleries with the total of 302 stairs. The first floor of the Minaret houses eight oriental-style rooms which served as Liechtensteins´ museum of oriental items. The top gallery offers a view of the park, nearby Pálava highlands, Bílé Karpaty mountains and even the top of St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna.

John´s Castle (Janův hrad)

John´s Castle is a pseudogothic artificial ruin of a castle (a fashion of those days) built for Johann, Prince of Liechtenstein between 1801 and 1808. The unstable sub-soil with a large presence of underground waters had to be reinforced by wooden bars which then served as a foundation for a construction made of stones from the neaby Pohansko site. Its architect aimed to create a true imitation of a real castle. All details are considered: among all, three oak spiral staircases go upwards clockwise direction just like staircases in old castles did.
Unlike other artificial ruins built in those times, John´s Castle was inhabitable and used as a gamekeeper´s lodge and hunting lodge.
